Registration

What dance styles do you teach?

At Dance Expression, most adult beginner and intermediate batches, kids, teens, and tweens will begin with Bollywood incorporating classical techniques (Bharatnatyam and Kathak) and disciplines. As the classes progress, they will be taught other styles including BollyHop, Indo-Contemporary, Lyrical and Folk such as Bhangra and Garba. This is depending on the level of the class. Each style is choreographed and taught to Bollywood music and remixes.

How old does my child have to be to register for classes?

The starting age for a student to register for classes at Dance Expression is 3 years old. There is no age limit. Classes are divided into the following categories based on age groups:

  • BollyTappy– 3 to 5 years old
  • BollyKids – 6 to 9 years old
  • BollyTweens – 9-12 years old
  • BollyTeens – 12 to 17 years old
  • BollyGroove – 18+ years old

This is a good age to get children comfortable with the dance studio environment, and as they grow with our studio family, they will be ready to take on dance routines etc.

I have never danced before; will I still be able to enroll for the classes?

At Dance Expression, we strongly believe that everyone can dance. Our expert Bollywood instructors have designed our classes to cater and accommodate all levels – beginners, intermediate and experienced dancers.

Where are the classes held?

Our classes are held at Markham’s first and only Bollywood dance studio – 322 Copper Creek Drive.

How many classes are in a session?

Our curriculum is focused on building skills throughout the year. From time to time, we have short session programs. Workshop classes are also available in different styles including Bollywood.

Can I join a class if I have a medical condition?

Yes, you can join if you have a medical condition. However, you are required to get a doctor’s note that allows you to participate in the class. It’s the student’s responsibility to indicate their medical condition to the instructor prior to the beginning of the class (in-person AND on the registration forms).

How can I register for a session?

For our year-long programs, we offer a trial class where you get your own instructor to walk you through a short routine and the fundamentals of our studio and programming. We will get to know what you would like to learn, and then we will make recommendations that suit your needs. To book your trial class, go here. Once you’re ready to enroll, our team will guide you through the registration process.

Would I be able to join a session mid-term?

We allow mid-term registration for sessions through September-June. The last session in the year includes a year-end show. For this session, we do not allow mid-term registration. You will have to wait for the start of the next session to join Dance Expression.

Do you offer performing opportunities?

Enrolments for our Intensive program are done by auditions only. These students are chosen based on their dance ability and potential during our Auditions. As good practice, you should arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of the class. For your first class, you should come 15 minutes early to meet your instructor.

What is the duration of the class?

The duration of all classes is one hour except for preschool classes which are 45 minutes long. Exceptions will apply to workshops and intensive programs.

What do I wear to dance class? Is there anything else I need to bring with me?

At Dance Expression, we believe that wearing studio uniforms gives students a sense of belonging to our family. It also helps us create an identity for our studio in the community. Uniform shirts are provided during registration for dance classes. You may wear tights, yoga pants, or sweatpants. We also advise to bring a full-size towel or a Yoga mat for floor workouts and ALL fitness classes. You may also bring a hand towel if you sweat easily. A water bottle is a MUST! Don’t sweat it if you forget your hand towel, we have them available for purchase at the studio.

Are parents allowed to watch the class?

We have open-curtain days on which parents can watch their kids in class. Specific dates/times will be communicated to parents by the instructor. We don’t allow parents to watch classes every week as some kids get easily distracted.

Can I take a trial class or watch a class?

We offer trial classes which give you an opportunity to participate in the class. If you decide to continue with the session, we will ask you to register and provide payment before attending the next class. We do not allow prospective students to watch a class as we strongly believe it is beneficial for you to take part in the class to make an informed decision about joining the session.
